What is a Tommy’s Margarita Cocktail?
Tommy's Margarita is a variation of one of the most iconic cocktails in the world, the Margarita. It was created in the 1990s at the Tommy's Mexican Restaurant in San Francisco, California, by Julio Bermejo.
The key difference between a Tommy's Margarita and a traditional Margarita lies in the sweetener used. Instead of using triple sec or orange liqueur, Tommy's Margarita uses agave nectar as the sweetener. Agave nectar is a sweetener derived from the agave plant, which is also used to produce tequila.
The result is a slightly sweeter and more balanced Margarita, with the agave nectar complementing the flavours of the tequila and lime. Tommy's Margarita has gained popularity for its simplicity and for showcasing the natural flavours of the tequila without the overpowering sweetness of a traditional Margarita.
History of the Cocktail…..
The Tommy's Margarita is a classic cocktail that has its roots in San Francisco, California. It was created by Julio Bermejo, a bartender at the famous Tommy's Mexican Restaurant, which is known for its extensive tequila selection.
The story goes that Julio developed the drink in the late 1980s when he was experimenting with different ways to showcase the flavours of tequila. He wanted to create a margarita that would allow the tequila to be the standout ingredient, rather than being masked by excessive citrus flavours or overly sweet ingredients.
The result was the Tommy's Margarita, a simple yet flavourful cocktail that consists of just three ingredients: tequila, lime juice, and agave syrup. By using agave syrup instead of the traditional triple sec or orange liqueur, the sweetness is more subtle and allows the tequila's natural flavours to shine through.
Word got out about Julio's creation, and soon the Tommy's Margarita was being enjoyed by cocktail enthusiasts and tequila lovers alike. It gained popularity not only in San Francisco but also across the country and around the world.
